fin fitness - HEALTHY
If you catch a rainbow trout or lake trout with only the adipose fin missing and want to provide the head for analysis, please follow the instructions below. This diagram shows a fish with a missing adipose (back) fin. There are small black spots on the back, sides above the lateral line, base of the dorsal fin, and upper half of the caudal fin.
Context Explanation
Coho differ from the Chinook and other salmonids of the Great Lakes by having the inside of their teeth set in w hite gums, their tail slightly forked with spots on The front dorsal fin has 12 to 14 spines (a stiff, sharp support of the fin) and the back dorsal fin has two spines and 12 to 14 rays (soft, flexible support). Be careful of the spiny fins, which are sharp enough to pierce the skin, when handling a yellow perch (Fig. 1). Although fish can be missed during the process of fin-clipping, and regeneration of fins can occur, we have seen evidence of natural reproduction of lake trout in Lake Michigan for decades but more have been detected since 2011.

Insight Material
The number of unclipped lake trout captured in assessment surveys and documented in the creel surveys varies lake-wide. The snakehead’s anal fin is long - about 2/3 the length of the dorsal fin, while the bowfin’s anal fin is short - less than one quarter the length of the dorsal fin, and The snakehead’s pelvic fins are found almost under-neath the pectoral fins, while the bowfin’s pelvic fins are set back from the pectoral fins.
