The infection is highly contagious and occurs most often in children. Enterobiasis is frequently asymptomatic. The most typical symptom is perianal pruritus, especially at night, which may lead to excoriations and bacterial superinfection. Occasionally, invasion of the female genital tract with vulvovaginitis and pelvic or peritoneal granulomas can occur. Pinworm infection (threadworm infection in the UK), also known as enterobiasis, is a human parasitic disease caused by the pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis.

[3] Enterobiasis occurs in both temperate and tropical climates; it is the most common helminthic infection in the United States and Western Europe. Trichuriasis occurs most commonly in tropical climates. Enterobiasis is one of the commonest worm diseases in humans, occurring predominantly in children and, albeit far more rarely, also in adults. The pinworm lays its eggs primarily at nighttime in the (peri-)anal region, often causing intense anal pruritus. The medical name for the parasite is Enterobius vermicularis, but it is commonly termed a pinworm in both the lay and medical literature. These parasites are also termed seatworms or threadworms, and the infections are medically termed enterobiasis, oxyuriasis, or helminthiasis.
